Purpose: Defining safe and inclusive schools and identifying the actions we can take to make the schools in PVUSD more safe and inclusive.

7:30 – Refreshments and Warm Up Activity

Two Questions for Post Its:

  1. What are one or two questions you would like to ask an LGBT student? (one question on each post-it) 
  2. What systems or programs exist at your school to support LGBT youth? (Include school name and one program per post-it).

Overview about elements of Safe Schools Environments

Five key areas of awareness: District leadership, Teacher leadership, Mental Health / Counselor leadership, Health Leadership, Student leadership.

State and District Policies Regarding LGBT Youth 

 

9:00 - Activity in table groups:

c) Discuss as Group:  What support elements currently exist in our district and schools that promote a safe and inclusive school environment for all students but especially LGBT students? 

d) Whole group: Update LGBT Support Programs in PVUSD poster

9:45 - ACTIVITY: Safe and Inclusive School Environment Posters

4 posters displayed around the room. Post it notes for participants. 

  • Top of Poster 1: If having a safe and inclusive school climate for all students were central to our work…how would we feel?
  • Top of Poster 2: If having a safe and inclusive school climate for all students were central to our work… what would we see?
  • Top of Poster 3: If having a safe and inclusive school climate for all students were central to our work…what would we hear?
  • Top of Poster 4: If having a safe and inclusive school climate for all students were central to our work…what would the adults and the students work on?  

 

Room Prep: Post the 4 posters around the room. Give each person a stack of post it notes and something to write with.

 

Process:

  • 5 min:  Intro: The purpose of this activity is to understand what safe and inclusive schools should look like in PVUSD.   
  • 5 min: Step 1 – Silent Writing: (No talking, just writing) Look at the posters around the room and fill out as many post its as you can in the next 5 minutes to go on any of the posters – fill out at least one post it for each poster. Just write – quiet time. 
  • 5 min. Step 2 – Display your thoughts on Posters: Now that you are finished, please go and put your post-its on the posters and then sit back down.
  • 5 min. Step 3 – Walk around: Walk around and look at each poster. Identify any “ahas” that are interesting to you. Feel free to make any notations on the posters such as ? or “agree” or !!...
  • 10 min. Step 4: Discussion Questions: 
    • As you looked around the posters, what “ahas” or important things stood out to you?  
    • As we look at “what exists” poster and these new posters, what are some elements that are the same?
    • Which elements do we need to work on?
